The Sheldon Institute for Barbara Shineman Scholars has honored the legacy of Edward Austin Sheldon, a pioneer in teacher education, for nearly four decades. Founded in 1978 as a program for gifted 4th to 6th graders, it initially offered courses in art, science, and more. By the early 1980s, it expanded to a full-day, two-week program for 2nd to 10th graders from diverse backgrounds.
In 2015, the Tarandi Foundation established a fund to support low-income students, followed by a $1 million gift in 2018 from the Richard S. Shineman Foundation, enhancing the program and renaming it in honor of Barbara Shineman.
Today, the Institute offers hands-on academic and cultural courses for students ages 5 to 14, led by college professors and experts. Activities include science, art, technology, and wellness, with highlights such as veterinary science, yoga, and figure drawing. Younger students have engaged in explorations like observing butterflies and reading with therapy dogs, while older students design personalized schedules. The program fosters academic, creative, and social growth, inspiring a love of lifelong learning.
